Gopher Mother

“Weee! Fwee candy fowevah!” -A Gopher happily awaiting to be devoured by the Gopher Mother

The Gopher Mother (Mommy to the Gophers) is a goddess like figure central to the Cult of the Gopher Mother, the primary religion of the Gophers of Gophertopia.

Told as a bedtime story to newborn Gophers, the prophecy surrounding the Gopher Mother tells that one day, a giant Gopher known as the Gopher Mother will appear in space to remake the universe into a true utopia for only the Gophers and nobody else. Although the majority of Gophers are not self-aware enough to truly understand the meaning of the event, they still revere it as a profound religious occurence.

To prepare for this event, the Gophers make it their goal to eat as much food as possible to fatten themselves up enough to become “candy” for the Gopher Mother. Holidays and celebrations are incredibly frequent where they have massive feasts of sweets. This includes downright cannibalism where larger Gophers will eat smaller ones to grow in size. This is also the reason why Gophers will consume the remains of any deceased Gophers when possible to ensure their essence can be passed on.

Appearance

The Gopher Mother appears as a colossal Gopher several times the size of a standard rocky planet. Its body type is consistent with that of a morbidly obese Gopher with its head being small relative to the size of its body. Its limbs are completely vestigial, serving no purpose as the Gopher Mother floats through space through some sort of mysterious force.

The Gopher Mother’s eyes are permanently closed as its eyelids are too heavy to open. It does not need to use them as it is able to navigate entire through extrasensory perception.

The Gopher Mother is also capable of speaking although due to its sheer size, it speaks slowly in long droning sounds. Hearing a deep voice resonate the word “candy” throughout the void is a death knell for any nearby worlds that hear it.

Overview

When the time comes and the Gopher Mother appears, an event known as the Calling (the “Wakey-Wakey” among Gophers) occurs. All Gophers across the universe will then begin floating towards the sky and into space, congregating before the Gopher Mother to then be willingly eaten alive in the thousands. The process is not unlike the way a whale devours schools of plankton. The entire experience is incredibly euphoric to the Gophers, and they feel no pain. As they get digested, their bodies merge into the gut walls and their consciousnesses merge into one another and enter a blissful period where any sense of individualism is replaced by an eternal collective happiness. To them, this moment is known as “Free Candy Forever”.

Once the Gopher Mother has consumed enough smaller Gophers, it then becomes strengthened enough to begin its mission to devour the entire universe, one world at a time. It methodically swallows entire planets whole while its inhabitants are still on it. Unlike the Gophers who experience bliss from being devoured, non-Gophers are eternally tortured for the crime of “being mean” to the Gophers.

It is not entirely clear how long the process will take, but eventually, the Gopher Mother will have devoured enough planets to the point where it becomes so full that it explodes with a massive supernova. This explosion is powerful enough vaporize any worlds that were not directly eaten, and thus, it essentially obliterates all of reality.

The debris and entrails of the Gopher Mother consist of the partially digested masses of Gophers which then go on to seed new worlds with life. However, these life forms will be more Gophers, thus creating a new Gophertopia. This new, perfect universe will become one of eternal plenty and “no more meanies”. Eventually, the cycle will repeat itself and another Gopher Mother will appear to devour the next universe over and over forever.
